The Heritage Lottery Fund is one of the UK’s biggest funding bodies, having spent over £5.3 billion in the past two decades on projects aimed at preserving British heritage.

With the Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War approaching next year, the HLF has launched “Understanding the First World War”, which will help community projects mark the milestone and since 2010 has awarded over £45 million to such projects.

The HLF will seek to support a number of projects that include:

  • Local places, buildings or landscapes affected by the war
  • Arts and culture created during the war or in later years
  • Memories and experiences of people involved
  • Objects, documents and photographs

There are grants of £3000- £10000 on offer through the ‘First World War: then and now’ programme. Projects can focus on any heritage related to the war, although applicants are encouraged to share new perspectives and stories previously untold.

Projects must meet a range of outcomes to be funded which can be found on the website, and are welcome at any time. For further information on the grant scheme visit HLF website.
